Is the Oldest Birdhouse Still the Best?

Natural gourds were the first "bird houses." Today, gourds still make great homes for martins.  Gourds provide larger, deeper nest cavities. They are attractive to martins and have have better occupancy rates. They are predator-resistant; reduce premature fledgling; and overcome a weakness of most housing designsi.e., shared porches.

A cluster of gourds gives each pair of martins more privacy, so they spend less time defending their territory. The lack of a porch is an advantage with  lower fledgling fallout. Common porches promote male porch domination, which lowers occupancy rates, and permits porch wandering by nestlings, which can causes a higher mortality.

Groundhog Gravy

Recipe:

A groundhog: not an actual ingredient!
A family recipe from Lloyd Guindon, Pendle Hill’s groundskeeper for 25 years.
. Serves 6.
·                 1 lb. seasoned bulk sausage or ground meat
·                 1 onion, chopped
·                 2 cups milk
·                 ¼ cup flour
·                 1 teaspoon each marjoram, sage, savory
·                 ½ -1 teaspoon salt
·                 ½ teaspoon pepper

Sauté the sausage, adding the onion towards the end. Drain off fat. Heat the milk in microwave or double boiler until hot. Whisk the flour into a little of the milk until it makes a smooth paste. Whisk this into the milk. Add the spices, sausage, and onion.
Serve with biscuits, baked potatoes, or (traditional in the Guindon family) waffles.
Mom always required that we eat our first waffle with gravy before moving to the maple syrup and I had no problem with this rule.

compulsive gambling

A federal jury awarded $8.2 million to a plaintiff who claims that the Parkinson’s disease drug Mirapex caused him to gamble compulsively.
Gary Charbonneau says he was prescribed Mirapex in December 1997 to treat his Parkinson’s disease and stopped taking it in November 2005. He claims the drug caused him to become a compulsive gambler from March 2002 to February 2006, during which time he lost more than $260,000. And he aruged that Mirapex causes compulsive gambling and that the defendants knew of the side effect but did not conduct studies or warn doctors or patients.

Black Rail

The smallest rail in North America, the Black Rail is perhaps the most secretive too. This small denizen of shallow salt and freshwater marshes is rarely seen and its distinctive "kick-ee-doo" call is heard primarily at night.
