New batteries cometh

The new bat is solid state, i.e. Non flammable. It is higher energy dense, i.e. smaller in size. about 1/3 the traditional cost, and will charge in about 60 secs. A game changer for electric cars for sure.

Oh yeah some new solid state bats will charge to 90% capacity after 10,000 charging cycles!!! Note  battery in use for electric cars are useless when they only charge to 70%

Love Thanksgiving

Me and mine will be away this Thanksgiving.  I like my house, actually I prefer mom’s house, for the festivities. It’s my favorite holiday since childhood.  The ones I missed were when I was a detective, traded it for Xmas, or Xmas eve off.  (Always had someone stabbing a family member at the T dinner table.)  It’s my favorite for two reasons.  We had enough to eat (thanks to someone’s charity, the brown boxes).  And Xmas, birthdays, were always disappointing, empty stockings, empty promises, and my father’s anger. I can’t think about those,  but Thanksgiving was full of food, good company and cheer.  Thanks Mom.  We’ll be toasting you again this year.

The mound-building Adena People lived in West Virginia from approximately 1,000 B.C. to 1 A.D.  The Grave Creek Mound has been preserved and is located within this West Virginia town's city limits.This Indian burial mound was constructed around 200 B.C. The mound stands 69-feet tall and has a base diameter of 295-feet. The original mound was also encircled by a moat 5-feet deep, and 40-feet wide.

A man's police interrogation in Kansas City, Missouri was ended prematurely after he began answering questions by farting.  A detective's report said Mr Sykes "leaned to one side of his chair and released a loud fart" when asked for his address.  "Mr Sykes continued to be flatulent and I ended the interview," the detective wrote after recovering.

Cursive revisited

The US and some countries have dropped cursive writing.  Arguments hold that  classroom time can be better spent on contemporary skills.  But has ‘baby gone with the bath water.’  Studies suggest so.  Children aged three to five writing letters by hand had better recall of the letters then those who printed or saw letters in print.  A 2012 study put five-year-old children, who had yet to learn to read and write, through writing, typing, or tracing exercises.  Later, when shown images of the same letters an MRI machine scanned their brains.  In the children who wrote - but not those who typed - an area of the brain used in reading activated.  Researchers concluded that it's possible the physical act of writing might aid reading.  Evidence suggests that writing by hand enhances memorisation skills long beyond early childhood development.  Students taking long-form notes on pen and paper tended to process the information on a deeper level.

Ridiculous but curious research

A new study says that dogs choose the direction they relieve themselves based on our planet’s magnetic field.  After examining 70 dogs — made up of 37 breeds — over two years, 1,893 defecations and 5,582 urinations, researchers found that dogs preferred to “excrete with the body being aligned along the north-south axis.”  Dogs were observed in a free-roaming environment, not leashed and not influenced by walls or roads that would influence linear movement.  Leased dogs, however,  went anywhere and everywhere. God am I glad that science solved that problem.

How times change.

My 12 year old honor role son can not write his name nor can he read my handwritten notes to him. Some form of learning disorder?  Hardly.  Cursive, handwritting, penmanship (as we called it) are no longer taught in schools.  Children learn to print but not to write.  So I will have to teach him how to sign his name. And to add to my confusion, schools will stop teaching fractions next year, decimals only.  Sr Baptista would have a fit.

Beggars Banquet

Every year, 20 million tonnes of food goes to waste in the UK. . A large chunk of this waste comes from restaurants and supermarkets who have to throw away perfectly fine food due to regulations.The Beggars Banquet, an evening of fine dining with food salvaged from shops and restaurants who would otherwise have thrown it away is held annually by chefs of East London.
