Rain Barrel Facts

A shed that is 10’ x 10’, could collect 60 gallons from one 1 inch of rain.

Water usage increases in the summer by 30%. By reducing the demand from established water supplies during dry summer months, rain barrels help the environment. A rain barrel can save approximately 1,300 gallons of water during peak summer months.

Rain barrels reduce water pollution by preventing storm water run off with waste.

shed hunters

Gathering shed antlers or "sheds" attracts dedicated practitioners who refer to it colloquially as shed huntingbone picking or sometimes clinting. In the United States, the middle of December to the middle of February is considered shed hunting season, when deer, elk, and moose begin to shed.

"Shed hunters become prone to disorientation, delusion, and compulsive wanderings. Otherwise it's a good choice of activity  to recommend to those who might benefit from getting lost."

poem: A Caution To Everybody

Consider the auk;
Becoming extinct because he forgot how to fly, and could only walk.
Consider man, who may well become extinct
Because he forgot how to walk and learned how to fly before he thinked.

From TIME Magazine: Monday, Jun. 03, 1935

Fr Quirk and the James gang

Over West Virginia back country roads, made muddy by weeks of rain, ploughed a train of automobiles one day last week bearing 49 Catholic priests and Bishop John Joseph Swint of Wheeling. The party drew up before the small churchyard at Sand Fork. Forming in procession, the men of God marched into the church. There Bishop Swint solemnly handed purple robes, a purple biretta and a white lace cotta (surplice) to a wrinkled-faced, white-haired old priest named Thomas Aquinas Quirk whom Pope Pius XI had elected to invest with the title Monsignor.

This honorary officership in the army of the Church Militant was 65 years in coming to Father Quirk. Born in Ireland 91 years ago, he fought in the U. S. Civil War, became a priest in 1870, is supposed to have twice renounced his rights to an earldom. Alert old Father Quirk has ministered for half a century to three mountain parishes 15 miles apart. Devoted to his collie "Shep," his blackened pipe, his comfortable Congress gaiters and his crushed black hat, he refused until last year to accept an automobile from his flock, preferring to ride from parish to parish on a sturdy grey horse. Once, said he, his eye for horseflesh caused him to stop to admire a number of mounts tethered in Huntington. One of the horse-owners asked the way to a bank. That man, said Father Quirk, turned out to be Jesse James. He robbed the bank.

Nasty Case of Arthritis

A man flops down on a subway seat next to a priest. The man's tie is stained, his face is smeared with red lipstick, and a half-empty bottle of gin is sticking out of his torn coat pocket. He opens a newspaper and begins reading.
After a few minutes the guy turns to the priest and asks, 'Say, Father, what causes arthritis?' Loose living; cheap, wicked woman; too much alcohol; and contempt for your fellow man, 'answers the priest.' I'll be damned, 'the drunk mutters, returning to his paper.
The priest, thinking about what he said, nudges the man and apologises.' I'm very sorry. I didn't mean to be so harsh. How long have you had arthritis?'
'Oh, I don't have it, Father. But it says here that the Pope does.'

Neptune
The Neptune orbits at a distance of 4.5 billion km from the Sun.

Pluto
Pluto takes 248 years to complete one full orbit around the Sun. During this journey, the orbit of Pluto ranges in distance from the Sun following an elliptical orbit. At its closest point, it can be 30 astronomical units from the Sun (1 AU is the distance from the Earth to the Sun). At its furthest point, Pluto is 39 AU from the Sun.

Voyager is now outside the solar system. Look out for the photos to come!

Food and Politics

Recently I read in the news where a Chinese official accused a US Diplomat, of Chinese Ethnicity, of being a "banana" . Yellow on the outside, white on the inside.  I am familiar with the "Oreo" epithet but can't recall others, so the banana got me thinking.

1: what other metaphors (or is it analogies) are out there being flung on various ethnic dualists  .  I can't think of any though the "Oreo" slam needs revisited since Nabisco is selling a variety of combinations - yellow filling, green filling, yellow cookie, brown filling, brown filling with white filling and brown cookie,   How can we keep our heritage remembered when this kind of stuff happens (double stuff).
Don't know but if you know of any other food laws/judgments, let me know.  I'm curious

2: what metaphors (or analogies) can we add to the landfill of aspersions, not having been invented yet?
Ok, an Irishman that is sober is what?  A green pepper?  An avocado?  Green Apple? Spoiled bologna? There are so many interesting foods begging to join the list.  Cream-filled donut?  Hindi?  Mexicans, are they considered brown or red or what?  French have prominent noses (Gaul and Roman) but how do you wrap a food around that?  Help me!!!

Celtic symbol, the Horse

As a Celtic symbol, the Horse was associated with war. With war, comes attributes of victory, conquer, longevity as well as procurement of territory and other spoils that come with triumph in battle.

All of these heady aspects of valor were associated with the Horse in Celt animal symbolism. In fact, so much so, the Celts hailed the Horse as the beast belonging to the sun god, and assigned it a place with the goddess Epona (Mother horse goddess of Earth).

Human Sub Spieces Predicted

Different human sub-species predicted by Dr Oliver Curry

Humanity may split into two sub-species in time as predicted by HG Wells, according to evolutionary theorist Oliver Curry of the London School of Economics.  He predicts a genetic upper class and a dim-witted underclass to emerge.  People will become choosier about their sexual partners, causing humanity to divide into a genetic upper class,  tall, slim, healthy, attractive, intelligent, and creative and a far cry from the "underclass" humans who would have evolved into dim-witted, ugly, squat goblin-like creatures.

In the nearer future, humans will evolve in 1,000 years into giants between 6ft and 7ft tall, while life-spans will have extended to 120 years, Dr Curry claims.
Physical appearance, driven by indicators of health, youth and fertility, will improve, he says, while men will exhibit symmetrical facial features, look athletic, and have squarer jaws, deeper voices and bigger penises.  Women, on the other hand, will develop lighter, smooth, hairless skin, large clear eyes, pert breasts, glossy hair, and even features, he adds. Racial differences will be ironed out by interbreeding, producing a uniform race of coffee-coloured people. Image, somebody pays this guy to sit around and think this stuff up.

native american prayer for rain

Cover my earth mother four times with many flowers.
Let the heavens be covered with the banked-up clouds.
Let the earth be covered with fog; cover the earth with rains.
Great waters, rains, cover the earth.  Lighting cover the earth.
Let thunder be heard over the earth; let thunder be heard;
Let thunder be heard over the six regions of the earth.

So True

Always forgive our enemies:
                 nothing annoys them as much.

oscar wilde

"There are things that we should tell them"

There's things that we should tell them.
We who have dared to sail the wild seas of matrimony
and lived to tell the tale.

Things about hard work and honesty,
Kindness and respect.
Things about ups and downs and every-days,
forgiveness, forebearance,
the virtue of patience.

But look at them.
These two who stand before us
are splendid in their happiness
and beautiful with love.

There's something we should tell them.

GO.

Go out on the wide open waters
of your union,
with the winds of love behind you
and your future
ahead.

GO.

Sail.

Your ship is stong.
Your sails are full.

And we, your community,
friends and family gathered here
to bear witness to
your marriage vow,

We give you our blessing.
We pledge our support,
We offer our love, and

We tell you,

GO.

Sail.

Live.

And cherish each other,

Always.

Rain?

“You say that you love the rain, but you open your umbrella when it rains. You say that you love the sun, but you find a shadow spot when it shines. You say that you love the wind, but you close the windows when it blows. This is why I'm afraid, you said that you love me too.”

those yellow lights

Yellow traffic control light's times are being reduced by fractions of a second in many communities , research indicates a half-second reduction in the interval can double the number of RLC (red light cameras) citations.  Safety concerns out way the increase in revenues and  more than a dozen states have outlawed red light cameras. Yeah for us!

Immaculée Ilibagiza

"Left to Tell "recounts ImmaculĂ©e Ilibagiza’s experience during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. She survived hidden for 91 days with seven other women in a small bathroom, no larger than 3 feet (0.91 m) long and 4 feet (1.2 m) wide. The bathroom was concealed in a room behind a wardrobe in the home of a Hutu pastor. During the genocide, most of Ilibagiza’s family was killed by Hutu soldiers: her mother, her father, and her two brothers. Besides herself, the only other survivor in her family was her brother Aimable, who was studying out of the country in Senegal and did not know the war was going on

Ridiculous English Sports Series

About 20 men and six women gathered on the stage to guzzle a whole raw onion in the fastest possible time at the 23rd annual Newent Onion Fayre in Gloucestershire.  The men were challenged with a raw, peeled 7oz onion while the women faced a slightly smaller 5oz onion. Alex Navari won the eye-watering event by polishing off a 7oz (0.2kg) onion in just 45 seconds, more than 30 seconds quicker than was managed last year.

Artic Ice is growing?   Wow!
It's unlikely that an Ice Age is coming soon but there is a "pause" in global warming and it appears that there will be a cool period for the next 10 years or so.

Heros series

Irene Sendler, nee WzyĹĽanowska),  nom de guerre "Jolanta" (15 February 1910 – May 2008),was a Polish social worker and humanitarian who served in the Polish Underground during World War II. Pretending to be a plumber working to prevent dysentery in the Warsaw Ghetto, she hid more than 2500 Jewish infants at the bottom of her tool box or in a trash bag in the back of her truck.  Deathly afraid of dysentery, guards never searched her. Children were then placed in Catholic orphanages with Christian names, taught Christian practices but not baptized. Tortured by the Gestapo she revealed nothing.  Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize she lost to Al Gore and his book on Global warming. Can you imagine?

Newgate 2, the entrance

Newgate was constructed in 3500 BC, and predates the pyramids and Stonehenge.  As such, it 's one of the oldest human built structures in the world.  And remains, like the others, a testament to the abilities of the primitives who constructed it, the Irish.

Fr Emil Kapaun Awarded Medal of Honor

Emil Kapaun.jpg

Father Emil Kapaun, 35 years old at the time of his death, the son of Czech immigrants, was awarded the Medal of Honor this week for his bravery and sacrifice during the Korean War.  His award  comes with 23 others whose original nominations were denied because of discrimination.  He became the 9th chaplain so honored.  He was previously awarded a Bronze Star in 1950 for rescuing a wounded comrade under heavy fire.  The following year he voluntarily stayed behind retreating troops to care for wounded soldiers certain to be taken captive by the Koreans.  During his time in captivity he was created with saving lives by negotiating with his captors, stealing food and medicine for his fellow captives, carrying ill colleagues on his back for long distances, and more.  He tended to the dying and offered mass in secret.  He died from disease and malnutrition while in captivity.  He is currently being considered for sainthood by the Vatican.

Coffee, Tea, or Pee?

In Georgian times, dinner among the 'better' classes was practically an all-day affair and could last up to five hours. Without the advantage of indoor plumbing, some upper-class hosts took it upon themselves to provide a variety of chamber pots on the sideboard of their dining room, encouraging peeing at the table. François de la Rochefoucauld, exiled to England after the French Revolution, was bewildered by this “most indecent” practice. He wrote extensively of the practice in his 1784 memoir, A Frenchman in England.

Newgrange

Ir

Archaeologists classified Newgrange as a passage tomb, however Newgrange is now recognised to be much more than a passage tomb. Ancient Temple is a more fitting classification, a place of astrological, spiritual, religious and ceremonial importance, much as present day cathedrals are places of prestige and worship where dignitaries may be laid to rest.

Only in West Virginia

The news anchor for a West Virginia TV station, on the right, had a minor disagreement with her weather person, on the left.  The result, in true 'whoppie' style, the loser, the anchor suffered a fractured skull, rupture ear drums and various cuts and bruises.  The winner, the weather chick got an assault arrest.
