Shrovetide Football has been played since the 12th century over two days on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. The games resembles a wild form of soccer. Two teams of unlimited participants, known as the Up'Ards and the Down'Ards signifying where they live in the town. move the ball over a 3 mile course through city streets by kicking, carrying, throwing. A goal requires the ball, larger than a soccer ball, be hit against a mile stone 3 times. Shops are boarded up and cars removed from the main streets to avoid damage. The rules are simple; murder or manslaughter is prohibited; Unnecessary violence is frowned upon; the ball may not be carried in a motorised vehicle, hidden in a bag, coat or rucksack, etc; cemeteries, churchyards and the town memorial gardens are out of bounds. Looks more like a riot.

this sounds a lot like "Keep Away"; we used to play in grade school, on the lunch hour in the empty lot across from the school. anything was allowable except punching or kicking in the head. Object of the game - keep the ball away from the other side. This was a lot more fun than our other lunchtime game - Strap the Man
ReplyDeletehadn't thought about that but yo're right, don't suppose anyone plays keep away anymore.
