Wassailing, a celebration normally associated with Christmas, drinking and visiting the homes of friends, has a little known spring time variant, apple wassailing. The ancient tradition of apple wassailing, in which trees are protected from evil spirits to ensure a plentiful crop is celebrated in the English West Country. The custom, which dates back to pagan times, involves people pouring cider over tree roots, singing songs, making loud noises, and lots of toasting. Happy wassailing.
