new year's eve wedding

Make at least one New Year's Eve Resolution for your marriage. Make one New Year's resolution each year that will strengthen your bond or make marriage easier.

Have a silly midnight tradition. Do something you both love at the stroke of midnight each year.

LEGION by CS Lewis

Lord, here my voice, my present voice I mean,
Not that which may be speaking an hour hence
(for I am Legion) in an opposite sense,
And not by show of hands decide between
The multiple factions which my state has seen
Or will see. Condescend to the pretense
That what speaks now is I; in its defense
Dissolve my parliament and intervene.

Thou wily not, though we asked it, quite recall
Free will once given. Yet to this moment’s choice
Give unfair weight. Hold me to this. Oh strain
A point - use legal fictions; for if all
My quarreling selves must bear an equal voice,
Farewell, thou hast created me in vain.

shed hunters

Gathering shed antlers or "sheds" attracts dedicated practitioners who refer to it colloquially as shed huntingbone picking or sometimes clinting. In the United States, the middle of December to the middle of February is considered shed hunting season, when deer, elk, and moose begin to shed.

"Shed hunters become prone to disorientation, delusion, and compulsive wanderings. Otherwise it's a good choice of activity  to recommend to those who might benefit from getting lost."
Alfred E. Neuman

Ping Ponging the history of Ping Pong

Ping Pong was invented by the Chinese who got the idea from the English invention of Tennis which was an idea taken from the Chinese Badminton which came from an idea for Cricket which is a form of the Flemish Hockey which is similar to ancient Mongolian Chinese game of Beikou which may have derived from the ancient Gaelic pastime of knocking the sith out of your friends and neighbors.

PS  I always check my facts and references to make sure they agree with my essays.

O but there is wisdom
In what the sages said;
But stretch that body for a while
And lay down that head
Till I have told the sages
Where man is comforted.

How could passion run so deep
Had I never thought
That the crime of being born
Blackens all our lot?
But where the crime's committed
The crime can be forgot.

The Jewel Tea Company

In 1933, the Autumn Leaf pattern China, manufactured by Hall, was introduced as a premium line for the Jewel Tea Company. The three piece serving set was offered in 1933 and it was so popular that it stayed in the line to the end of production in 1976. The Jewel In Home Shopping Service discontinued it's business operations in January 1981. Many routes are still in business, operated independently.

jpr: The Jewel Man was a door to door sales/delivery man offering everything needed by the house wife including food items as well as toys for Christmass. Coupons were earned for each purchase and specialty items such as the china were  redeemed.

The Boy Who Laughed at Santa Claus

by Ogden Nash
In Baltimore there lived a boy.
He wasn't anybody's joy.
Although his name was Jabez Dawes,
His character was full of flaws.

In school he never led his classes,
He hid old ladies' reading glasses,
His mouth was open when he chewed,
And elbows to the table glued.
He stole the milk of hungry kittens,
And walked through doors marked NO ADMITTANCE.
He said he acted thus because
There wasn't any Santa Claus.
Deploring how he did behave,
His parents swiftly sought their grave.
They hurried through the portals pearly,
And Jabez left the funeral early.
What was beheld by Jabez Dawes?
The fireplace full of Santa Claus!
Then Jabez fell upon his knees
With cries of 'Don't,' and 'Pretty Please.'
He howled, 'I don't know where you read it,
But anyhow, I never said it!'
'Jabez' replied the angry saint,
'It isn't I, it's you that ain't.

Although there is a Santa Claus,
There isn't any Jabez Dawes!'
Beware the fate of Jabez Dawes,
The saucy boy who mocked the saint.

Christmass quotes

“I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.”
Charles Dickens

“I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!”
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

“One of the most glorious messes in the world is the mess created in the living room on Christmas day. Don't clean it up too quickly."
Andy Rooney

“Christmas, my child, is love in action."
Dale Evans Rogers

Redneck Letter From Home

I'm writing this letter slow because I know you can't read fast. We don't live where we did when you left home. Your Dad read in the newspaper that most accidents happen within 20 miles from your home, so we moved.
I won't be able to send you the address because the last Arkansas family that lived here took the house numbers when they moved so that they wouldn't have to change their address.
Remember that coat you wanted me to send you? Your Uncle Stanley said it would be to heavy to send in the mail with the buttons on, so we cut them off and put them in the pockets.

Three of your friends went off a bridge in a pick-up truck. Ralph was driving. He rolled down the window and swam to safety. Your other two friends were in back. They drowned because they couldn't get the tailgate down.

Uncle Ted fell in a whisky vat last week. Some men tried to pull him out, but he fought them off playfully and drowned. We had him cremated and he burned for three days.

Christmass in Boiling Springs

Boiling Springs is one of the many picturesque small villages around Pennsylvania.  Beginning the first week of December, the town becomes magical.
The first Sunday in December is the date of the annual Christmas Tree lighting on the Childrens’ Lake. The lake is naturally heated and never freezes.
jpr: It's a lovely stay with a first class inn adjoining the lake.

Over The Misty Mountains Cold

Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.

The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.

The bells were ringing in the dale
And men looked up with faces pale;
The dragon’s ire more fierce than fire

Laid low their towers and houses frail.

The mountain smoked beneath the moon;
The dwarves they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled their hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.

Far over the misty mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!

by J R R Tolkien
