order of the golden ratio

  1. From the  geometry of ancient Greece , a golden rectangle is a rectangle whose side lengths are in the golden ratio, 1.618. The formation of this ratio is considered by some to be a governing force in the universe.
  2. jpr: i have two flower beds in this ratio of width to height!

The beauty of the scam.

This handsome devil is 45 year old Paul Gonzales currently a resident of the LA County Jail.  An alleged "dine-and-dash" dater, he's accused of repeatedly leaving restaurant bills unpaid and facing 13 years in prison.  So far 10 women who he arranged online dates with have come forward to accuse him of various financial crimes.  Seems old Paul would invite them to an expensive restaurant for dinner.  After a fine meal he'd excuse himself for the loo, then disappear leaving his dates with the bill.

What more can one say.

‘Tis a fearful thing to love what death can touch.
A fearful thing to love, to hope, to dream, to be –
to be, And oh, to lose.
A thing for fools, this,
And a holy thing,
a holy thing to love.
For your life has lived in me, your laugh once lifted me, your word was gift to me.
To remember this brings painful joy.
‘Tis a human thing, love, a holy thing, to love what death has touched.”

Another whacky English sport.

I wonder if the English ever work?  No one, I mean no one has sooo many sports.  Most merely an excuse to hang out and drink?  A five-a-side soccer match played in a river.  The annual event is played in the River Windrush, which is ankle-deep as it flows through the village of Bourton-on-the-Water in the Cotswolds.  Hundreds of spectators turned out on Monday to watch the match, which is said to date back about 100 years.

The World's Oldest Currency; another usless factoid.

Commemorative gold pound coins

The British currency ‘the pound’ has been in continuous use since first introduced in the 8th century, making it the oldest currency in the world.  Modeled on an older system introduced by the Romans,  its name derives from the Latin word Libra for weight or balance, via the construction Libra Pondo, meaning a pound weight. While the word ‘libra’ has  long since been discarded, it makes its presence felt in both the £ symbol, an ornate L, and the abbreviational system for the unit of mass, lb.  Its value originally equated to the price of a pound of silver.  A pound was originally divided into 20 shillings and 240 silver pennies, but now is based on the decimal system.

You Might be a Redneck Gardener If:

You mow your lawn and find a wheelbarrow.
A half moon reminds you of your fat husband pulling weeds.
You think a chain saw is a musical instrument.
You move your refrigerator and the grass underneath it is yellow.
You know how many bags of fertilizer your car can hold.
You've ever cleaned your house with a leaf blower.
You empty the trash when you have enough to fill up the pickup.
You can amuse yourself for more that an hour with a hose.
You've been cited for reckless driving on a riding lawn mower.
You move your weed-eater to take a bath.

living in a car

JPR: In the 1980s job boom in Houston Tx. There was a housing shortage. Some workers lived in their car under bridges. Summer temps run 105/99 F. There is no cool running water in such heat as water lines run just under the surface  Flash forward to the Marcelus Shale job explosion in Appalachia. .Low home prices have doubled over the past several years. There is a housing shortage now with multibillon dollar chemical plants soon to be built there.

Viva La France

Paris installed 100's public urinals on city streets so that people can, um, pee and go as they please. They look like mailboxes and are called "uritrottoirs"; the name is a combination of the French words for 'urinal' and 'sidewalk'. Perhaps the most contested one has been placed very close to the heavily-trafficked Notre Dame cathedral, while residents in upscale neighborhoods are balking at the idea of people taking a leak outside their door.

Police Reports?

Native American Poem

I give you this one thought to keep -
I am with you still - I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the sweet uplifting rush,
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not think of me as gone -
I am with you still in each new dawn.

rural china

Between 50 and 55 per cent of the population resides in rural areas, where about two-thirds of the population is engaged in farming, forestry, animal husbandry and fishing. About 40 per cent of total employment in China is in rural areas.

Reform-driven economic growth, together with a well-funded national poverty reduction program, has brought about a major reduction in rural poverty in mostly the eastern provinces. The current official poverty line is less than 1$ US per person per day!!

This water hole was the favorite of a great  dog named Penelope.  This is the first time in 11 years  that my boy ever plunged. He watched Penelope swim here for years but never immersed until after Penelope's recent death.

One-Question IQ Test

Here's a one-question IQ Test to help you decide how you should spend the rest of your day ...

There is a mute who wants to buy a toothbrush.  By imitating the action of brushing one's teeth, he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done.

Now, if there is a blind man who wishes to buy a pair of sunglasses, how should he express himself?  Think about it first then follow the jump..
