RIP Alice

There is a great sadness at Baldwin Hill tonight.  Alice Tinker, a village church verger, to  the Vicar of Dibley between 1994 and 2007, died at age 53.  A complete idiot, hilarious beyond description, she leaves a void in this house,  RIP

Figure it out yet?

Happy birthday

Billy Graham dead at 99

When JP and I were very little we would spend weekends with our grandparents,  Hughie had been given a TV by his colleagues on retirement.  Long before we had one.  Probably 1949 or 50.  Lizzie thought it  an 'occasion of sin.'  So it was turned on only for Friday night fights when we were allowed to stay up and eat Wheaties with our grandfather.  Otherwise the TV would be one all day Sunday after mass.  They were faithful to the Bishop Sheen lectures, 'life is worth living.'  I have watched them recently, ridiculous, meaningless gibberish and very gay.  But afterwards the Billy Graham Crusade.  Devout Catholics, they loved this man.

Hope today

These guys live for ever.

Marty Allen died this week at 95.  JP and I used to watch him in black and white on the Ed Sullivan show in the 50's with his comedy partner, Rossi.

The screen machine

There's something special about the Scots and their cousins the Irish.  Both countries have loads of small villages and island communities far from 'civilization' and the advantages of modern life.  But in both places private non profit organizations built mobile movie theaters that travel the rural roads bringing current films to the isolated populations.  The trucks unfold into 80 seat modern theaters.  The Scot one serves 30 communities, including places with less than 100 residents.   America could learn a lesson

End violence as entertainment

We are raising a nation of demons!

2013 research
It's virtually impossible to keep your kid in a violence-free bubble. "Ninety percent of movies, 68% of video games, and 60% of TV shows show some depictions of violence," says Caroline Knorr, parenting editor for Common Sense Media, the online resource for vetting kids media. Kids 8 and under watch an average of 1 hour and 40 minutes of TV or DVDs a day; older kids watch an average of 4 hours daily. Most kids start playing video games around age 4, according to their research.

The Joy of Reading

A 300-year-old "secrets of sex" manual banned for its shocking content is due to be sold at auction next month. Dating back to 1720, The Secrets of Generation, offers a range of advice with the added power of illustrative woodcuts. It warns women that if they "generate with animals" they run the risk of giving birth to monsters.  One picture shows a man sporting an impressive tail; another shows a child being born with feathers and a single, clawed leg. Men wanting to "make their seed abound" should diet on a combination of root vegetables and songbirds.

Another Classic Goes

Vic Damone, born Vito Farinoli, died this week at 89.  We used to listen to him or radio, before television, one of mom's regulars.  Sinatra and Damone, along with Tony Bennett, Perry Como, Dean Martin and others, formed a group of Italian Americans who dominated the postwar pop music field.  RIP

Happy Imbolic

Imbolc is a Gaelic traditional festival marking the beginning of spring and is associated
with the goddess Bridget.  Held on 1/2 February  in Ireland and Scotland since the Neolithic
period.  Brigid visits homes at Imbolc. People make a bed for her and leave her food and drink.
Special feasts are held, holy wells visited and it was also a time for divination.   A Biddy group,
masked men and woman dressed in white wearing elaborate straw hats,  visit rural and public
houses to bring good luck and chase away evil spirits. .

Shackleton

Thy sea, O God, so great,
My boat so small.
It cannot be that any happy fate
Will me befall
Save as Thy goodness opens paths for me
Through the consuming vastness of the sea.
Thy winds, O God, so strong,
So slight my sail.
How could I curb and bit them on the long
And saltry trail,
Unless Thy love were mightier than the wrath
Of all the tempests that beset my path?
Thy world, O God, so fierce,
And I so frail.
Yet, though its arrows threaten oft to pierce
My fragile mail,
Cities of refuge rise where dangers cease,
Sweet silences abound, and all is peace.
