Irish slave trade

The Irish slave trade began when James II sold 30,000 Irish prisoners as slaves to the New World. His Proclamation of 1625 required Irish political prisoners be sent overseas and sold to English settlers in the West Indies. By the mid 1600s, the Irish were the main slaves sold to Antigua and Montserrat. At that time, 70% of the total population of Montserrat were Irish slaves.
Ireland quickly became the biggest source of human livestock for English merchants. The majority of the early slaves to the New World were actually white.
From 1641 to 1652, over 500,000 Irish were killed by the English and another 300,000 were sold as slaves. Ireland’s population fell from about 1,500,000 to 600,000 in one single decade. Families were ripped apart as the British did not allow Irish dads to take their wives and children with them across the Atlantic. This led to a helpless population of homeless women and children. Britain’s solution was to auction them off as well.
During the 1650s, over 100,000 Irish children between the ages of 10 and 14 were taken from their parents and sold as slaves in the West Indies, Virginia and New England. In this decade, 52,000 Irish (mostly women and children) were sold to Barbados and Virginia. Another 30,000 Irish men and women were also transported and sold to the highest bidder. In 1656, Cromwell ordered that 2000 Irish children be taken to Jamaica and sold as slaves to English settlers.

SHAKESPEAREAN ENTOMOLOGY

SONNET 43... shakespeare

When most I wink, then do mine eyes best see,
For all the day they view things unrespected;
But when I sleep, in dreams they look on thee,
And darkly bright are bright in dark directed.
Then thou, whose shadow shadows doth make bright,
How would thy shadow's form form happy show
To the clear day with thy much clearer light,
When to unseeing eyes thy shade shines so!
How would, I say, mine eyes be blessed made
By looking on thee in the living day,
When in dead night thy fair imperfect shade
Through heavy sleep on sightless eyes doth stay!
All days are nights to see till I see thee,
And nights bright days when dreams do show thee me.

Paul Riddick

Paul Riddick is obsessed with fast cars. It’s how quickly he can get a new purchase back to the showroom and trade it in for something else. The grandfather has been named Britain’s most prolific car owner by Auto Express magazine after going through more than 400 since he passed his driving test in 1959 – an average of eight a year.

joke

A woman is taking her 6 year old grandson to his first mass at 10:00am at her church.

Upon entering the boy points to a large bronze plaque mounted upon the inside wall of the church

"There are listed all the members of our parish who died in service!" The woman states.

"This service or the earlier one?" The boys responds

Is it that time already?

an Amish POV

Amish Farm and Homestead
An Older Order Amish farmer from western PA, was recently offered $500,000 for the natural gas rights to his land.  Older Order Amish believe that modern devices such as phones, tvs, automobiles, electricity, etc create a chasm between the individual and God.  So they live as simply as possible - horse and buggy; make your own clothes and candles and cheese, etc.

The farmer turned down the offer.  His explanation:  "What would I spend it on?"

the zulu warrior

On 22 January 1879, at Rorke's Drift on the Natal border with Zululand, in South Africa, a tiny British garrison of 140 men - many of them sick and wounded - fought for 12 hours to repel repeated attacks by up to 3,000 Zulu warriors. This heroic defence was rewarded by Queen Victoria's government with no fewer than 11 Victoria Crosses, and was later immortalised by the film Zulu (1964).

Few, however, remember that it was fought on the same day that the British Army suffered its most humiliating defeat at nearby Isandlwana. Of the original 1,750 defenders - 1,000 British and 750 black auxiliaries - 1,350 had been killed.

oldness and RX's

It is impossible for a senior citizen (rank has its privileges my azz) to regulate the taking of their medicine on their own.  Did I take all of them today?  Or some of them and which ones?.  I can't remember.  I think I did but maybe I didn't.  So I'm even odds to take a second dose or skip a dose only to have the same dilemma tomorrow which confounds the problem, cause I may not have taken it yesterday or I might have taken double and depending on my confidence in my judgment I'll do the same today.  Alright I can get a pill box with the days on them and that'll keep me on track, except that sometimes I'm not sure what day it is.  It may be Tuesday but I think its Saturday (I've done that).  If I'm sharp that day I'll look on my computer to find the day.  But I may believe for sure that I know the day and go with that, and might be wrong. theoretically its possible that I end up taking a triple or quadruple dose or none for 3 or 4 days.  Sheesh Louise, I'm doomed.

American Hypocrisy

Many chicks and soccer moms and starlets clamor for the rights of Muslim women (truthiness - most men don't care), citing the fact that there are restrictions on their lives (burka is one example plus many proscriptions on behavior - e.g. cannot go out alone, cannot be seen in the company of a man who is not a close relative; frequently can't vote; have little legal support, etc.).  We may be correct in drawing attention to repressive inequalities between men's rights and women's rights in these societies.  We are probably not correct or should I say not honest when we ignore or even admire similar rules and restrictions in various US sub-cultures.

"The Last Rose Of Summer"

'Tis the last rose of summer left blooming alone
All her lovely companions are faded and gone
No flower of her kindred, no rosebud is nigh
To reflect back her blushes and give sigh for sigh

I'll not leave thee, thou lone one, to pine on the stem
Since the lovely are sleeping, go sleep thou with them
Thus kindly I scatter thy leaves o'er the bed
Where thy mates of the garden lie scentless and dead

So soon may I follow when friendships decay
And from love's shining circle the gems drop away
When true hearts lie withered and fond ones are flown
Oh who would inhabit this bleak world alone?
This bleak world alone

Cute Disgusting Cuddly Post

It's been too hot for golf but I was jonesing so I got out early this morning and was able to practice my cursing.  Here's the worthwhile part - the course I often play has lots of wildlife.  I saw a gaggle of wild Turkeys, looking gobble gobble delicious.  I also saw a Momma Deer and two darling little babies, probably not more than a week or two old, tiny they wuz.  She was protective as can be so I stayed still and just watched.  She made sure all was safe before she led them across the fairway into the woods.  Then she lingered behind for a couple moments to make sure nothing was threatening behind them.  And the little bambinos were just plain goofy-cute, like me.

Aphorism and Corollary (long scree - sorry)

I don't remember where this originated but its my favorite quote (note that is unnecessary and annoying to add "best ever all-time greatest..." to get the idea across.)

"If the only tool you have is a Hammer, then everything starts to look like a nail."
Probably some Chinese Zu or Xu or tao or whatever; but I will take credit unless you come up with the source.

This seems (I will not add "to me" because who else would it "seem to".  I haven't a clue what it seems like to you so you should know that its my opinion that I express.  Jeez.") to have Universal application in my experience.  Generals see strategy and tactics; pimps see t&a; bankers see rates and terms, etc.  Now lets apply this to the players in the "Global Warming" situation.  The unknowing, ill-informed, irrational masses tend to see terrible uncertain disasters.  The climatologists and meteorologists tend to see evidence of events peculiar to their area of expertise, thus underlining their professional interest and importance; the deciders (politicians) see the opportunities to cater to the masses irrational fears and compulsions to enable their own maintenance or gain of power and wealth.

I am not a global warming denier.  I am instead a global warming "agnostic".
And a skeptic that we know enough to be able to make necessary changes, let alone to make decisions about what changes will be beneficial.  What I fear most is not the global warming but the political pressures to do something even though we have little idea how to fix what we're are somewhat uncertain is the problem.   The politicians will act  in a way that maintains or enhances their status.  This will certainly be either useless and costly or disastrous and costly.  Reason and truth is a minor element in policy.  For e.g. What is the single greatest source of greenhouse gases - Beef Production.  Have you seen any calls for cutting beef consumption and production?  No!  It would be political suicide for a politician.  Don't trust them to do what's best for us. It is much safer politically to target Coal Production which has less political and economic influence

So my corollary - If you only look for signs of dramatic, disastrous, inevitable global climate change for the worst, that's what you'll see.  I happen to think that this planet has been around a long time and its got many surprises for us yet.

Lying Eyes

The article “Eye Direction and Lying” discusses  determining a person's truthfulness based on the direction of their gaze. You can tell whether a person is constructing or remembering information by the direction in which they are looking. Meaning, if you ask them to describe an experience and they look up and to the left from your viewpoint, in the direction of visual construction, they are probably making it up rather than remembering. A gaze downward can also indicate guilt or shame because the person knows their statements to be false.

Be careful with these cues. They are indications but they are not foolproof.
