The world gets weider and weider.

Yes its a peacock.   I have been frustrated lately with little dogs in airports, on airplanes, shops etc wearing 'comfort dog,'  uniforms.  Not 'service dog' but 'comfort dog.'  What the hell is a comfort dog? All my dogs have been comfort dogs.  Sounds like a hustle to me.  United Airlines agrees, refusing to allow a passenger to bring her 'comfort peacok' on board her flight.    Just wondering, IS THERE ANY SANITY LEFT ANYWHERE?

The Swiss are always so logical.

Yodellers in Switzerland have something to sing about after a university revealed it will offer degrees in the alpine art-form.  The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (Luasa) will run a three-year bachelor's degree and a two-year master's.  The courses will begin in the 2018-19 academic year. Let me think, shall I major in medicine or yooodaloooing?

West Virginia leads the nation in the drug overdose death rate, at 52 deaths per 100,000 people.

Drug distributors poured 20.8 million pain pills into a West Virginia town of 3,000, to two pharmacies four blocks apart in Williamson, W.Va., from 2006 to 2016. In the same period 4 million pain pills went to another pharmacy in Oceana, W.Va., a town of 1,390 people, that’s  689 pills for every man, woman and child in Oceana.  The same company sent 7 million pain pills to a pharmacy in Beckley, a town of 16,000, and 6.3 million pain pills to two pharmacies in Kermit, a town of 400 people.  One million hydrocodone pills in 2008 alone went to a pharmacy in Mount Gay-Shamrock, a town of about 1,779 people. Gee wonder what the problem is?

Irish road block.

Blowpig's Creek

Near our house, where JP walks the dogs, is a small often nearly dry creek. Our beast Blowpig loved to lie in the water and mud.  We've had some snow and some rain and Blowpig's creek is ragging.  She still go in if she was with us.

Survival for a couple hours

This is me going home after traipsing around the woods for awhile. It was really cold. I think I stayed outside too long. I was becoming confused and disoriented. I stopped at the bank to ask directions, as I was a little lost. They acted very rude and chased me off. The Kwik and Go And/or Stop and Shop folks made up for it though. They gave me money and cigarettes without me even asking. It was a pretty good day after all.

The good ol days, when life was simpler and happier. Ever wonder Why?

7 up - introduced in 1929.  Ingredients included water, sugar, citric acid, LITHIUM CITRATE, SODIUM CITRATE, and some flavoring.  Lithium Citrate is a compound of lithium and citrate that was used as a mood stabilizer in treatment of manic states and bipolar disorder.  They stopped using it in 7UP in 1948.  The empire has declined ever since.l

A New VanGogh

In early 1886, Vincent van Gogh moved from Brussels to Paris, where he lived for two years with his brother Theo. Their apartment was located just a few minutes from Montmartre, the famous hill in the city’s 18th arrondissement. Titled “The Hill of Montmartre with Stone Quarry,” the work is a dusky sketch that shows a cluster of buildings and windmills on the top of Montmartre, with a quarry further down the hill.  Discovered in 2014, verified in 2017.

Civil war ,..praying

Lord, Remember Me
O Thou, from Whom all goodness flows,
I lift my soul to Thee;
In all my sorrows, conflicts, woes,
Good Lord, remember me.
If on my aching, burdened heart,
My sins lie heavily,
Thy pardon grant, Thy peace impart;
Good Lord, remember me.
If trials sore obstruct my way,
And ills I can not flee,
Then let my strength be as my day;
Good Lord, remember me.
If, worn with pain, disease, and grief,
This feeble frame should be,
Grant patience, rest, and kind relief;
Good Lord remember me.
And oh! when, in the hour of death,
I bow to Thy decree,
Jesu, receive my parting breath;
Good Lord, remember me.
—Amen.
This prayer was included in “Balm for the Weary and the Wounded,” a prayer manual for Confederate soldiers, published in 1864 by Evans & Cogswell.

The German edition of Playboy magazine will feature a transgender model on its cover for the first time.

Giuliana Farfalla, 21, will be topless, a tradition for such magazines in Germany.  Farfalla, born Pascal Radermacher in the south-western German city of Breisgau, said that early in her childhood she felt she was in the wrong body. She underwent gender reassignment surgery at the age of 16.

flowers in ice

Flower-Gathering by Robert Frost
I LEFT you in the morning,
And in the morning glow,
You walked a way beside me
To make me sad to go.
Do you know me in the gloaming,
Gaunt and dusty gray with roaming?
Are you dumb because you know me not,
Or dumb because you know?

Childhood memories.

"Put somme cardboard in it boys.'

The Irish have entered the world of strange sports.

The season of goodwill was firmly put to one side in the Republic of Ireland earlier after hundreds took part in an annual Christmas Tree throwing competition. the 'sport' is very popular in the Scandinavian countries of northern Europe.  Held in Ennis, County Clare since 2012, it's a simple contest. Who can throw a 5ft Christmas tree the furthest?  The traditional trophy is an old badminton trophy with a badminton racket hanging out of it and a Christmas tree on top.

Bald Knob, Cold Knob

About 30 years or so ago, the family (me, wife, 2 young boys) took a trip on the Cass Railroad in WVa.  It was a nice fall day, about 70 degrees at the departure point.  As the train ambled up the ridiculously beautiful mountain, the temperature kept falling.  By the time we made it to the mountain top it was well below freezing with a fierce wind to boot.  The train was not heated.  I took off my long sleeve shirt to give one of my kids some warmth.  I still had a t-shirt on but was as cold as I could be.  My wife had a light jacket that she wrapped around the other child, leaving her like me wearing a short sleeve t-shirt.  We were all shivering with no recourse.  An hour and a half up the mountain;  an hour and a half return.  Someone, a sympathetic woman gave us a chocolate bar that we split and tasted so comforting..
I love W.Va but that day we were unprepared.
By the way, near the top of the mountain was the remnants of a small town tucked in a small hollow.  I don't remember the name but at the time it was recognized has having the coldest temp ever recorded in the Continental US.

Will we ever understand the English?

On New Year's Eve in Allendale, England, villagers carry burning barrels of tar on their heads. The 45 barrel carriers - called Guisers - parade through the town and the whisky barrels are used to light a bonfire at midnight in the town center while spectators and participants shout "Be damned to he who throws last." Hey sounds good to me, burning tar on my head.

Loyalty

A dog had been faithfully lying beside the body of its 67 year old deceased owner for several weeks when the pair were discovered in a flat in Hungary.  She was severely malnourished when found, could not stand, and had to be dragged away.  She's doing well.
