Christmas, Dec 25?

Christmas customs are a mix of pre-Christian, Christian, and secular traditions.   While the month and date of Jesus' birth are unknown, by the early 4th century, perhaps as early as 311 AD, the Church had placed Christmas on December 25.  Biblical evidence raises doubts, ‘lambs in the field' occur only in spring, and references to the census that brought the family to Bethlem are not supported by the extensive census records kept by the Romans.  The precise origin of December 25 is unclear.  Various dates were speculated: May 20, April 18 or 19, March 25, January 2, November 17 or 20.  Many scholars believe the date was chosen to correspond with popular pagan winter solstice festivals in practice, particularly the Roman festival  ‘sun as god’ celebrated throughout the Empire.  Christians regularly participated. Some influence came from church leaders’ belief that March 25 was the date of the Annunciation and thus Christ was born 9 months later on Dec. 25. Many present day practices are direct holdover pagan solstice traditions,i.e. kindled lights, ivy, mistletoe, pine boughs, and decorated trees.  Nativity scenes were introduced in the 12th century by St Francis. The Romans displayed such figurines of family during important festivals.

You Know You're Redneck When ......

You ever cut your grass and found a car.
You own a home that is mobile and 5 cars that aren't.
Your stereo speakers used to belong to the Drive-in Theater.
You burn your yard rather than mow it.
Your wife has ever said, "Come move this transmission so I can take a bath.’
The Salvation Army declines your mattress.
You've ever raked leaves in your kitchen.
You were shooting pool when any of your kids were born.
You've ever hit a deer with your car...deliberately.
Your school fight song was "Dueling Banjos".
You've ever given rat traps as gifts.
You clean your fingernails with a stick.Your mother has "ammo" on her Christmas list.
Every socket in your house breaks a fire code.
There are more than five McDonald's bags in your car.
There has ever been crime-scene tape on your bathroom door.
The taillight covers of your car are made of red tape.
You've ever bathed with flea and tick soap.
Your kids take a siphon hose to "Show and Tell."
The dog catcher calls for a backup unit when visiting your house.
You've ever bought a used cap.

Dawn Snow by Ja Pa

Sleeping wife keeps cold from our bed,
Wood cranes move slowly,
Snow gathers light from tired moon,
Early sun fades shadow,
dream of childhood in Valley of  Tea Leaf,
Of father in field, mother in field,
Now fields empty with deep snows.

Smallest Pub in the Artic

Raketten opening times

The Raketten (Rocket) kiosk is an historic landmark in Tromso Norway city centre, and has been serving sausages to hungry locals since May. Now its owners have relaunched it as a
bar.  At only 4.6 square metres (50 square feet) it has little room inside for more than a
small kitchen and a single beer tap, but the terrace can seat up to nine.

Despite being well inside the Arctic Circle, Tromso's drinkers prefer a chilled light ale with their hot dogs, though the Raketten also offers a sherry for visitors looking for something warmer to wash down their wieners.

The Great Fornicator

Robert Burns, Scotland's great poet, was famous for more than his writings. Here he writes after public discovery of his impregnation of a servant. The Fornicator
Ye jovial boys who love the joys.
The blissful joys of Lovers;
Yet dare avow with dauntless brow,
When th' bony lass discovers;
Pray draw near and lend an ear,
And welcome in a Prater,
For I've lately been on quarantine,
A proven Fornicator.

snails
there's a poem about everything

limy and slippery,
Snails are such fun.
Slowly they move,
They can't even run!

Leaving their trail
Behind as they go.
You can see where they've been
And how very slow.

On their back is a shell,
It's really their home.
It's ever so small,
But it goes where they roam.

World Pole Dancing Competition

So the pole-dancing world cup is a real thing

This week thousands of men and women from 37 countries will compete in the World Pole
Dancing contest in Brazil.  I volunteered to judge, but my wife wouldn't let me go.

judges wanted...apply within

At 252 pounds, LuAyne Barber - stage name Lulu - is not your average pole dancer.
But her ample body, a U.S. size 22, does not hold her back from the lifts, spins, slides, stands and grips that define the dance form's athletic routines.

The 26-year-old, who works at a car dealership by day, has been pole dancing for five years, having taken up the unusual hobby in 2006 after having a baby.
As a former competitive cheerleader and dance student, Ms Barber was no stranger to the stage - but she still had to sum up a lot of courage to strip off and take a pole dancing class.

Cinderella, or The Little Glass Slipper is a European folk tale embodying a myth-element of unjust oppression published by Charles Perrault in 1697, and by the Brothers Grimm The word "Cinderella" has, by analogy, come to mean one whose attributes were unrecognized, or one who unexpectedly achieves recognition or success after a period of obscurity and neglect

SONNET 135

Whoever hath her wish, thou hast thy Will,
And Will to boot, and Will in overplus;
More than enough am I that vex thee still,
To thy sweet will making addition thus.
Wilt thou, whose will is large and spacious,
Not once vouchsafe to hide my will in thine?
Shall will in others seem right gracious,
And in my will no fair acceptance shine?
The sea all water, yet receives rain still
And in abundance addeth to his store;
So thou, being rich in Will, add to thy Will
One will of mine, to make thy large Will more.
Let no unkind no fair beseechers kill;
Think all but one, and me in that one Will.

And So It Goes

In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lover's past
Until a new one comes along
………
And every time I've held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes and so it goes
And so will you soon, I suppose

But if my silence made you leave
Then that would be my worst mistake
So I will share this room with you
And you can have this heart to break
……….
So I would choose to be with you
That's if the choice were mine to make
But you can make decisions too
And you can have this heart to break

And so it goes and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows

Public Breastfeeding In The Sistine Chapel?

Last seek, in an annual event, the Pope baptized 33 new born, the children of Vatican employees.  As always it was held in the Sistine Chapel.  Early on he departed from his script to encourage mothers to feel free to beast feed the hungry ones. Finally ... a true apostle with the real meaning of Christianity.

The great whisky shortage

Thanks to the fancy whiskey fad, America's consumption may soon outstrip the supply.  The overall bourbon category is experiencing 5% growth, but premium brands are up nearly 20% from last year… The increase in sales, coupled with the aging process and evaporation loss, leads to a shortage with no end in sight

jpr: Guys, this is serious!
