A little knowledge

When about 12 yrs old or so, us younger guys would sometimes mess with the older boys after dark when they'd be playing football or something under the street lights.  We'd pick grapes or something equally squishy, from the neighbors' backyards.  Then in the darkness between the houses on both sides of the street, we'd pellet the big kids.  Cautiously at first, just a few so they'd not be able to figure out the cause.  Then when they did we let all our ammo fly and then run like hell as they gave chase - big strong tough.  We ran in fear of our lives, not even paying attention to the direction as long as it was away from them, avoiding potholes and jumping gates, and if we fell we didn't stop to assess the damage.  Just hauling ass..  I always felt like I ran a lot faster in the darkness than I did in the daytime.  Like a deer is how it felt. Or like a downhill racer on the edge of losing all control.

They seldom caught any of us.  The fact is:  we were running faster. One runs faster after dark!  Proven.  I read the study but forgot where so all I got is a little knowledge.  It explained why but I forgot.
Oh, yeah, our pursuers were also running faster.  Ask JPR and Billy.

Santacon

SantaCon sometimes sees a battle of the Santas erupting in the streets.

Dec 14 has become a very special holiday in New York City.  Known as Santacon, thousands of New Yorkers dressed as Santa hit bars in mid town Manhattan after work for an evening of excess drinking, urinating and vomiting in public spaces. Thousands of extra police officers will be on duty to deal with the wide spread debauchery.  Unfortunately, I am unable to attend this year but will be peeing and puking in my front yard in 'smypatco' with my friends.

England vs New Zealand international rugby

England went down to a hard-fought defeat at the hands of New Zealand despite a valiant attempt which saw them recover from a 14-point deficit to lead midway through the second half.

jpr: Watched the match. it was thrilling action through out. The whole of Wembly stadium broke into song as the English closed to score. The chorus sang the negro spiritual " swing low sweet chariot."

more on wisedom

In Wisdom is a spirit
intelligent, holy, unique,
Manifold, subtle, agile,
clear, unstained, certain,
Not baneful, loving the good, keen,
unhampered, beneficent, kindly,
Firm, secure, tranquil,
all-powerful, all-seeing,
And pervading all spirits,
though they be intelligent, pure and very subtle.
For Wisdom is mobile beyond all motion,
and she penetrates and pervades all things by reason of her purity.

New Discovery--yeti

According to the BBC, British scientists recently compared DNA from hair samples believed to be from a Yeti with a data base of DNA from all known hair bearing animals.  The only results were similarities with bears, but the suspect sample did not positively match any known species.   However, when compared with a larger data base containing now extinct animals scientists got a positive match with ancient polar bears and brown bears, along with an Irishman named Micky Halloran, an 18th century arctic explorer.

You scoff, you poo pah, you even eschew me and at best you thought I was looney but if you looked it up...

here's what you learned:  DNA testing has shown that ALL Polar Bears descended from one Irish ancestor.
"what does Poo Pah mean?"

Michael Kevin Kearney

He spoke his first words at four months. At the age of six months, he said to his pediatrician "I have a left ear infection"and learned to read at the age of ten months. When Michael was four, he was given multiple-choice diagnostic tests for the Johns Hopkins precocious math program. Without having studied specifically for the exam, Michael achieved a perfect score.
He attended San Marin High School in Novato, California, for one year, graduating at the age of six in 1990. He enrolled at Santa Rosa Junior College in Sonoma County, California, graduating at age 8 with an Associate of Science in Geology. He is listed in the Guinness Book as the world's youngest university graduate at the age of ten, receiving a bachelor's degree in anthropology from the University of South Alabama.

First Real 'g-men.' An Irish Factoid.

A granite memento of the DMP at Pearse Street Garda station. Photograph: Frank Miller
The relief is that of a famous constable of the  Dublin Metropolitan  Police (DMP) who died in 1917 trying to save the life of a trapped workman. The DMP was the British Policing System in Dublin in the years before independence.   It co-existed with the RIC.  While not much mentioned today, the force was famous for advances in forensic work, including the early use of photography, plaster casting, and electronic communications. One of its little know contributions to American Policing is the introduction of the term 'G-men' to refer to armed plainclothes police officers.  American movies and legend incorrectly credit 1930's gangsters with creating the expression to mean 'government men.'  But the Irish used the expression years earlier to describe the dreaded armed plainclothes detectives of 'G Division' of the DMP, thus 'G-men.'  Irish American gangsters brought it with them.

Great Halloween Gag

Severed hands packaged like supermarket meat

A Norwegian 'gag shop' sold fake body parts wrapped like meat (to include nutritional data) under the brand name CHOP SHOP during the Halloween season.  Local 'child care' officials were not thrilled and the police were called to inspect the material.  "All in good fun" according to the manufacture.  What a great gag.
