Though for the day.

baby hummingbird

The little babies will weigh approximately 0.62 grams. That's one-third (1/3) the weight of a United States Dime. Baby hummingbirds are born the size of a plump raisin

When a mother hummingbird comes to feed the baby hummingbirds, the baby hummingbirds will feel the wind from the wing of their mother and lift their little heads up and open their mouths.

There are wild flowers seeds that provide feed for humming birds.

Uh OH!

If you live in a rural area  then there is a good chance you have a black bear  as neighbor. Bears are opportunists and rarely pass up the prospect of a free meal. During the spring and summer, it is best to remove bird feeders of all types. Generally, many birds have sufficient food supply during this time. If you would like to place food out for the birds, then do so away from your home and try to bring feeders and food inside during the evenings. Feeders and suet can be left outside during the winter when bears are hibernating and birds have the fewest food resources. Do not feed bears as they can easily become nuisance animals when they associate people with food.

"After a year of marriage, I can honestly say, there is not one thing I like about my husband."

Rain, Rain Go Away,
Come again some other day.
When you fall down every day
My feelings fall with you.

Martyr of Dachau: Blessed Titus Brandsma

Watching a priest in Dachau being tortured was a Nazi nurse of Dutch origin whose job it was to give people lethal injections and who hated religion, especially clergy. As she observed Father Brandsma, she would sometimes mock him and religion. This prompted him to engage her in conversation, asking why she hated faith so much.

Not long before she killed him July 26, 1942, at 1:50pm, he gave her his handmade rosary. He told her to pray, and when she laughed at him, he simply told her again to pray.

Sometime in the 1950s, at a Carmelite community in Germany, an aging woman presented herself to the friars, wanting to talk. It was the nurse. She came asking forgiveness for hastening Father Brandsma’s death. Later, at Blessed Titus’ beatification in 1985, she was among the congregants.

Look it up!

Our Lady's Bugs

In medevil times an infestation of small insects was destroying the crops and threatened Europe with starvation. Prayers to the Blessed Mother resulted in a huge 'cloud' of these bugs descending over the fields of the continent.

One Lady Bug can eat 1500  aphids in a year.

MPGA..make pasta great again

Not a political statement just good humor!

History According to India.

Two smiling Indian schoolgirls

Parents and students in India's western state of Gujarat are up in arms over school textbooks full of glaring errors.  The textbook makes statements such as: "Japan dropped a nuclear bomb on the US during World War II," and "Proportion of poisonous gas CO3 has increased due to cutting of trees," as well as incorrectly reporting that "Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on October 30, 1948." In fact, carbon trioxide is not normally found in nature, and India's independence leader was killed on 30 January 1948.  Gujarat's Standard 8 social science textbook - being used by more than 50,000 students - is said to be particularly bad with more than 120 errors. A true world power?

gabriel gargam of lourdes

In 1899, he was injured in a train accident. Just 30 years old, he was paralyzed and could not eat solid food. Two years later the man weighed just 78 lbs, both legs were atrophied with both feet gangrenous. He was attended by two nurses day and night.

His aunt (a nun) convinced him to visit Lourdes. Although he had not been to church for fifteen  years, the man experienced both a spiritual and physical healing in the presence of the Eucharist at Lourdes.  He began to walk at once. He was subsequently examined by 60 prominent physicians, all proclaimed him cured.

Today is feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes!

The man is famous at Lourdes since he spent the next 50 years attending the sick there.

Famous 1909 murder solved.

File pic of Joe Petrosino
In 1909 Lt. Joe Petrosino, a famous New York city police detective, an Italian immigrant and the first police officer to investigate the mafia, was shot dead in the street during a mission to Sicily to collect evidence.  His murder remained unsolved until last month.  During the recent arrest of 95 suspected members of two clans involved in extortion rackets in the island's capital Palermo, one of those arrested was recorded boasting that his father's uncle had carried out the killing. ‘He killed the top policeman on the orders of Cascio Ferro’, the head of the mafia and the subject of the detective’s investigation.  Ferro ran a gang in NYC as well. The case is now the oldest cold case ever solved.

James Taylor and wife

The girl who gets gifts from birds

Eight-year-old Gabi Mann  feeds the crows in her garden - and they bring her gifts in return.  Each morning, they fill the backyard birdbath with fresh water and cover bird-feeder platforms with peanuts.  As they work, crows assemble on the telephone lines, calling loudly to them.
The crows  clear the feeder of peanuts, and leave shiny trinkets on the empty tray; an earring, a hinge, a polished rock, anything shiny and small enough to fit in a crow's mouth.  When we were little, grandma had a pet crow called 'ma' who would come when called, tease us by stealing our hats, and then laugh when we chased after it.

for Tom

Holy Sonnets: Death, be not proud

Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally
And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.

The Japanese cure for elderly poverty

Elderly inmates in Japanese prisons had risen from 1 in 20 to 1 in 5 in recent years.   Most sever sentences of less than 2 years, but re-offend.   The crimes are minor, usually shop lifting of less than $10.00.  The problem, poverty among the elderly.  Japanese prisons are well known for their civility.  good food, comfortable accommodations, health care, social activities.   The elderly poor are intentionally choosing prison.  The cost to the state of their confinement is so huge that the government is building non prison facilities for this population.

America, consider common sense

Like the Americans, the English have a crises of student debt.  So much so that poor and working
class students can not do a university degree.   The English system all ready awards most bachelor's degrees in three years.  This week the government authorized  two year bachelors degrees, 24 months continuous study.  Cheaper, more attractive to many, better for the economy.  America's national student is 2 trillion dollars.  But don't let common sense interfere with our corporate greed.

R.I.P. John Brown

Typical Irishman who lived a full life. Born in county Armagh, one of ten children, served six years in the Irish Army, where he "road a motorcycle around Dublin". John died at 84 yrs leaving his wife of 60 years and six children. He was well known and well liked in our town. Buried from St joe's Catholic Church.
