So this guy gets on a plane see and.......

Neil Thomas Douglas boarded a flight on Thursday night and came face-to-face with his doppelganger.   The photographer explained that when he boarded the Ryanair flight to Galway via London Stansted there was already someone sitting in his seat.  "There was a dude already on my seat. When the guy looked up, I thought: 'He looks like me'." But the pair were later to encounter a further coincidence when they checked into the same hotel in Galway.  "Later that night, I went to the pub and again, there was my twin. Total weirdness. We had a laugh and a pint."

country church in fall

Come to the church by the WildwoodOh, come to the church in the valeNo spot is so dear to my childhoodAs the little brown church in the vale
How sweet on a clear Sabbath morningTo listen to the clear ringing bellsIts tones, so sweetly are callingOh, come to the church in the vale.

There close by the side of that loved one'Neath the tree where the wild flowers bloomWhen farewell hymns shall be chantedI shall rest  by her side in the tomb.

FALL by Aileen Fisher

The last of October
We lock the garden gate.
"The flowers alive all withered
That used to stand straight.
The last of October
We put the swings away
And the porch looks deserted
Where we like to play.
The last of October
The birds have all flown,
The screens are in the attic,
The sand pile's all gone;
Everything is put away
Before it starts to snow---
I wonder if the ladybugs
Have any place to go.

Calendula October's birth flower

Just as each month has a birthstone, each month also has a birth flower. Each birth flower also has a special symbolic meaning that results from the flower’s specific type and color.

The brilliant and unusual calendula represents October birthdays because its broad, colorful flowers follow the path of the sun throughout the day, soaking up all remaining sunlight left in Autumn. October birthdays are also known for being warm, receptive people who are easy going and easy to talk to.

Halloween

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced 'sau-en). The Celts celebrated their new year on November 1st. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of winter. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead opened. On the night of October 31st, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future.

In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and martyrs. All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween.

'Fall, leaves, fall' by Emily Bronte

Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every leaf speaks bliss to me
Fluttering from the autumn tree.

I shall smile when wreaths of snow
Blossom where the rose should grow;
I shall sing when night's decay
Ushers in a drearier day.

How to Take Photos of Art Work (2)

I still have no clue, so this is an approximation of the painting I did of Geese in North Carolina toolin around in the winter.  The colors and tones are slightly different in the photo.  That aggravates me but I will keep trying different things until someone lets me know better.

How to Take Photos of Artwork...

I wish the hell I knew!  Other painters tell me its easy but I've not yet made a decent photo of any of my work.  Oh yeah by the way: if there is uncharacteristic global warming (and though the science "community" voted that there is while numerous other esteemed scientists reject the idea), it is less than certain that human impact is in any way significant.  Yet we're gonna fix something that may not be a problem; or one that we cannot have any effect on.  One science mag (not The Onion) published that if Humans used up all the fossil fuel that there is, the sea level would rise 200 feet. That's kind of like saying that the Hulk could beat up Superman if he exercised a lot more.  It makes me giggle at the thought.  And I wanna take clear sharper images of paintings and don't know how, though I've tried many techniques.  Maybe i need a new camera or a new me.
Help me!  I'm stuck in an inaccurate photo of my painting.

Gathering Leaves by Robert Frost

Spades take up leaves
No better than spoons,
And bags full of leaves
Are light as balloons.

I make a great noise
Of rustling all day
Like rabbit and deer
Running away.

But the mountains I raise
Elude my embrace,
Flowing over my arms
And into my face.

I may load and unload
Again and again
Till I fill the whole shed,
And what have I then?

Next to nothing for weight,
And since they grew duller
From contact with earth,
Next to nothing for color.

Next to nothing for use.
But a crop is a crop,
And who's to say where
The harvest shall stop?

Cyrano de Bergerac

Hercule-Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac (6 March 1619 – 28 July 1655) was a French dramatist and duelist. He is now best remembered for the works of fiction which have been woven, often very loosely, around his life story, most notably the 1897 play by Edmond Rostand. In these fictional works he is featured with an overly large nose, which people would travel from miles around to see. Portraits suggest that he did have a big nose, though not nearly as large as described in Rostand's play and the subsequent works about him. His work furnished models and ideas for subsequent writers.

On the Death of John Paul the Great

On 31 March 2005 following a urinary tract infection, Pope John Paul II developed septic shock, a widespread form of infection with a very high fever and profoundly low blood pressure. In accordance with his wishes to die in the Vatican, he was given care there. Later that day, Vatican sources announced that John Paul II had been given the Anointing of the Sick by his friend and secretary Stanisław Dziwisz. During the final days of the Pope's life, the lights were kept burning through the night where he lay in the Papal apartment on the top floor of the Apostolic Palace. Tens of thousands of people assembled and held vigil in St. Peter's Square and the surrounding streets for two days. Upon hearing of this, the dying pope was said to have stated: "I have searched for you, and now you have come to me, and I thank you.

On Saturday 2 April 2005, at about 15:30 CEST, John Paul II spoke his final words, "pozwólcie mi odejść do domu Ojca", ("Let me depart to the house of the Father"), to his aides, and fell into a coma about four hours later

Appalachian Apple Stack Cake

Dried Apple Stack Cake
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg, well beaten
1/3 cup molasses
1/2 cup buttermilk
3 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon vanilla
Cooked dried apples
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream shortening and sugar; add beaten egg, molasses, buttermilk, and mix well. Sift flour, soda, salt, and ginger into a big mixing bowl. Make hole in center of dry ingredients and pour in creamed mix, stirring until well blended. Add vanilla, stir well, and roll out dough as you would for a piecrust. Cut to fit 9-inch pan or cast-iron skillet (this amount of dough will make 7 layers). Bake layers for 10 to 12 minutes, or until lightly browned. When cool, stack layers with spiced, sweetened old-fashioned dried apples. (See recipe below.) Spread between layers and smooth around sides and top. Sprinkle with powdered sugar, if desired, or beat egg whites into a meringue and spread on outside of cake. You may brown the meringue if desired. Prepare cake at least a day before serving it and put in refrigerator (it will keep several days, if necessary, in a cool place). To serve, slice into very thin layers.
Cooked Dried Apples*
Put 1 pound apples in heavy pan and cover with cold water. You may need to add water several times to keep apples from sticking to pan. Cook until soft enough to mash. While still hot, mash apples and add 1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup white sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon cloves, and 1 teaspoon allspice.
If dried apples are not available, cook several pounds cooking apples with a little water. Add spices and sugars as listed above, and cook until mixture is very thick.

help for the house wife

When one finds it necessary to fling an object in the home, remembering the above rule of physics is of help. Drag is always a problem for the moving projectile's flight in hitting a elusive spouse...eh target. As the schematic indicates, spin changes the path of the missile. What is under appreciated by most infuriated females is that spin enhances speed and range of the weapon. No spin has even greater drag resulting in dramatic loss in ranging and accuracy. The conclusion is given. Spin should be used but practice is necessary.

Good luck!

historical fact

After the Battle of Gettysburg, the discarded rifles were collected and sent to Washington to be inspected and reissued. Some 37,574 rifles were recovered. They found 24,000were still loaded; 6,000 had one round in the barrel; 12,000 had two rounds in the barrel; 6,000 had three to ten rounds in the barrel. One rifle had been stuffed to the top with twenty-three rounds in the barrel.

Some thoughts on dogs

"Dogs are not our whole life, but they make us whole."

Dharma

by Billy Collins

The way the dog trots out the front door
every morning
without a hat or an umbrella,
without any money
or the keys to her doghouse
never fails to fill the saucer of my heart
with milky admiration.

Who provides a finer example
of a life without encumbrance—
Thoreau in his curtainless hut
with a single plate, a single spoon?
Gandhi with his staff and his holy diapers?

Off she goes into the material world
with nothing but her brown coat
and her modest blue collar,
following only her wet nose,
the twin portals of her steady breathing,
followed only by the plume of her tail.
If only she did not shove the cat aside
every morning
and eat all his food
what a model of self-containment she
would be,
what a paragon of earthly detachment.
If only she were not so eager
for a rub behind the ears,
so acrobatic in her welcomes,
if only I were not her god.

Wile E ?

Saw a Coyote in the rear parking lot of the Town Center Mall, downtown Ashland, Ky. Looked nearly identical to the one pictured. At first I saw the tail and thought it was a fox but when I got a side view there was not doubt. To get to the parking lot it had to cross a busy two-way street.  It maneuvered confidently and easily through the cars.  It was a busy area and the coyote was calm and self-assured.

My dream of mother

The past eve my mother entered my dream.
It was the first since her passing.
A dark presence not a sharpen image appeared.

She came with a great sorrow.

I asked if there was anything to be done that would end her deep sadness. There was no reply, just her continuance to share a heavy grief.

Needless to say I examined my life to see if all was in order by her values. So it seems to be mostly correct but for aging. The dream left a sense of inevitability that a sorrow looms that shall have to be accepted.

My prayers of petition being sent.

Update: seems my mother's sorrow was for former daughter in law...this sorrow continues to this day.

Exorcism, Still Around.

A Vatican-recognized university is offering a course in exorcism and demonic possession for a second year, concerned about the devil's lure.  The opening class of the "Exorcism and Prayer of Liberation" on Thursday at the Pontifical Academy Regina Apostolorum featured lectures about liturgical and spiritual aspects of Satanism and problems related to exorcism. "The aim of this course is to express a clear vision of the phenomenon," said Italian Bishop Andrea Gemma, a leading exorcist who delivered the opening lecture.  "Devil's action is much more common than people may think," Gemma said, adding that he performs at least four exorcisms a week. "Exorcism ... is an important prayer of the church to help those who believe to be, or who really are suffering from a diabolic infestation. ‘ Lectures, which will be broadcast via video to other pontifical institutes, focus on subjects that range from theological and historical aspects of Satanism to legal and medical issues. In 2005, Pope John Paul II wrote a letter requiring every US bishop to designate an exorcist.  Regular training conferences are held in Rome.

God Help Us.

There have long been allegations that the Vatican has a large number of gay priests who exercise considerable power in the running of the church.  Rome's newspapers frequently report on scandalous behavior.  In the latest,  Monsignor  Krzysztof Charamsa, a mid-level official in its doctrine office, came out in newspaper interviews in Italy and Poland saying he was happy and proud to be a gay priest, and that he was in love with a man whom he identified as his boyfriend.  The Vatican on Saturday fired him monsignor.  But the damage to the Pope's efforts had already been done.

The Gipsy Girl's Dream

I dreamt that I dwelt in marble halls,
With vassals and serfs at my side,
And of all who assembled within those walls,
That I was the hope and the pride.

I had riches too great to count, could boast
Of a high ancestral name;
But I also dreamt, which pleased me most,
That you lov'd me still the same...

I dreamt that suitors sought my hand;
That knights upon bended knee,
And with vows no maiden heart could withstand,
They pledg'd their faith to me;

And I dreamt that one of that noble host
Came forth my hand to claim.
But I also dreamt, which charmed me most,
That you lov'd me still the same...

The Renowned Philosopher Speaks About Beer

  • All right, brain, I don't like you and you don't like me - so let's just do this and I'll get back to killing you with beer.

  • I've figured out an alternative to giving up my beer. Basically, we become a family of traveling acrobats.
  • Now son, you don't want to drink beer. That's for Daddies, and kids with fake IDs.
  • Beer: So much more than just a breakfast drink.
  • Beer... Now there's a temporary solution.
  • Apu I need a keg and a six pack to hold me until I tap the keg.
  • Homer no function beer well without.

Synod on the Family

This Sunday will see the start of a Synod of Bishops in Rome that could become one of the defining moments for the Papacy of Pope Francis. An interim document during last year's Synod had led some to believe that the Vatican might ultimately agree a more liberal approach towards homosexuality and perhaps the taking of Holy Communion by remarried divorcees who had not first been granted an annulment.  Other issues include clerical sexual abuse and the ordination of women. However, Synod is not a democracy. All it can do is discuss and put forward recommendations and a summary of its findings.  After that, it will be up to Pope Francis to weigh up the opinions expressed, and to write an "Apostolic Exhortation" to the entire Roman Catholic Church. The Pope faces strong opposition. Good luck, as we need some changes.

First church in wildwoods

Capon Chapel is a mid-19th-century church near the town of Capon Bridge in the US state of West Virginia. A Baptist congregation began gathering at the site of the present-day church as early as 1756 and has served has a place of worship ever since.  It was used as a place of worship by Baptists until the late 19th or early 20th century, by the Southern Methodist Episcopal Church for most of the 20th century, and in this century by the United Methodist Church. The church cemetery contains the remains of American Civil War veterans from the Union and the Confederacy, and free and enslaved African Americans. Capon Chapel, along with its cemetery, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012 in recognition of its rural religious architecture representative of the Potomac Highlands region, and for its service as a rural church in Hampshire County.
