Earth’s magnetic field is undergoing significant shifts, and South Africa has front row seats to observe the changes. Satellites and magnetic observatories have recorded stirrings in the magnetic field – some areas weakening, some strengthening – which suggest that our planet is headed for a reversal of its magnetic poles in the next few hundred years.
normally the geographic North Pole is a magnetic south pole |
The time spans of between reversals are randomly distributed with most being between 0.1 and 1 million years with an average of 450,000 years.
