Geneaology 1.....jpr
Aunt Agnes K, grandfather Hugh C, uncle Dr John J, grandmother Elizabeth, mother Mary A, aunt Sr Helen E
2 things - one is that Elizabeth was a stern and cold woman, mean in some ways. Hugh, my sainted grandfather, as fine a man as ever existed, admitted as much in his last years, admitting that he did not miss her at all. two, she did not allow us to address our mother as Mom or Mommy. We were forced to call her "Mother". Her only son did not attend her funeral. Finally she sure was not a looker. Reminds me of Millard Fillmore. And I may be an ass but the truth is the truth. These are unnecessary comments but truthful.
Ok, Hugh's funeral. I get it. but what about Lizzie's? why didn't he attend hers? For you two brilliant scholars and professori, can you explain to my monkey skull, please?
this photo is early WW2, Sister still in high school. And the wall behind them looks like corner house they lived in for a long time in Burgestown. The ruff wood siding is still there. Lizzie looks exactly the same, even the same clothes as I remember her from the 50's. And stern was her middle name. She was 4 or 5 years older than Hughy who had no real interest in marrage. Family arranged it. I believe she was near 40 when they were married. Mom always missed her and assured me she wasn't all that stern. SHe forbid drinking so Hughy keep a bottle hidden in the field. And I was told, Sister order JJ home for the funeral.
Uncle JJ never wanted to come home for anything. He visited his mother a few weeks, maybe a month or two before she died to say goodbye. He felt that was enough. Apparently his parents expected him to return after medical school and assume a position in the family, something he very much did not want to do, mother said he and Hughy had a real falling out over it, thus to California. He was really like his mother hard and cold.

ReplyDeleteAhh!explains a lot. Hugh was asked, years after Elizabeth passed, if he missed her. His response, paraphrased,: "she was difficult to live with."
