Memorial Day...."mansions of the Lord"

To fallen soldiers let us sing,
Where no rockets fly nor bullets wing,
Our broken brothers let us bring
To the Mansions of the Lord
No more weeping,
No more fight,
No friends bleeding through the night,
Just Divine embrace,
Eternal light,
In the Mansions of the Lord
Where no mothers cry
And no children weep,
We shall stand and guard
Though the angels sleep,
Oh, through the ages let us keep
The Mansions of the Lord

Porcupine quills are commonly found embedded in muzzle, face, head and neck of dogs, but can be found anywhere. The trouble is, quills keep moving inward.

human levitation

bernini's st. teresa of avila
Teresa of Ávila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus, baptized as Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada, (March 28, 1515 – October 4, 1582) was a prominent Spanish mysticRoman Catholi saintCarmelite nun.

She was seen to levitate in Mass  as  her whole body was raised from the ground. If she felt God was going to levitate her body, she stretched out on the floor and called the nuns to sit on her and hold her down.

Her written accounts of such an experience was the motivation for Bernini. Later in life the sculptor would pray devoutly before his work which is to be found in the Cornaro Chapel, Santa Maria della VittoriaRome

Finally, some good news from the Church.

The last time Belgium's Grimbergen Abbey brewed beer, the United States was only about 20 years old. But the abbey now plans to make beer again, and for inspiration, it will turn to
the original recipes and brewing instructions in its archive of medieval texts.  They made beer from 1134 to 1789.

All Things Pass – by Lao-Tzu 600 B.C or so

All things pass
A sunrise does not last all morning
All things pass
A cloudburst does not last all day
All things pass
Nor a sunset all night
All things pass
What always changes?
-
Earth…sky…thunder…
mountain…water…
wind…fire…lake…
-
These change
And if these do not last
-
Do man’s visions last?
Do man’s illusions?
-
Take things as they come
-
All things pass

Irish sayings on women

There are only three kinds of men who don’t understand women: young men, old men, and middle aged men.

Choose a good woman's daughter though her father were the devil.

Never take a wife who has no fault.

Love hides ugliness.

Kevin of Glendalough

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwluBzDNEN8

Glendalough, or the Glen of two Lakes, is one of the most important sites of monastic ruins in Ireland. Before the arrival of St. Kevin this glen would have been desolate and remote, and would have been ideal for a secluded retreat.
St. Kevin’s Bed can best be described as a man made cave cut in the rock face very close to the edge of the mountain. It overlooks the upper lake from a height of about 30 odd feet (10 metres). The approach to the cave is very difficult, with access to it is through a rectangular space and a short passageway 3 ft. (1 metre) high and 2½ ft. wide. The inner or main part of the cave is just 4 ft. wide (1.5 metres) and less than 3 ft.(1 metre) high. It is reasonable to assume that the cave could only have been used as a sleeping place, and would have been impossible for an adult to stand upright in it, so it is quite likely that St Kevin only used it as his bed, or a place for pious prayer or meditation.

May 12!

Its the end of the world. A May snow yesterday in the next town over.

An Echo by Christina Georgina Rossetti

Come to me in the silence of the night;
Come in the speaking silence of a dream;
Come with soft rounded cheeks and eyes as bright
As sunlight on a stream;
Come back in tears,
O memory, hope, love of finished years.

O dream how sweet, too sweet, too bitter sweet,
Whose wakening should have been in Paradise,
Where souls brimfull of love abide and meet;
Where thirsting longing eyes
Watch the slow door
That opening, letting in, lets out no more.

Yet come to me in dreams, that I may live
My very life again though cold in death:
Come back to me in dreams, that I may give
Pulse for pulse, breath for breath:
Speak low, lean low
As long ago, my love, how long ago.

Bear bribes pup

Dogs are loyal. They  can be bought for a price. Jerry learned this when he discovered that his pup, Brick, had been letting a local bear dig through the family trash in exchange for some tasty deer bones.
“A bear has learned that my furry son can be bought. This is the THIRD TIME he’s been gifted deer bones in exchange for being allowed access to my trash.”

goldfinch

A most acrobatic bird. They are seed eaters that dart among the wild flowers. Their yellow color makes them look as a streak of sunshine when they speed away.

jpr: I have several wild flower gardens about my place. One just off my deck gives much delight for view of finches, hummers, and butterfly. These gardens are perennial which give rise to varying flowers from spring to late summer. Hurrah for mother nature.

Neanderthal Genome Reveals Fourth Human

papa new guinea natives have ~5% Denisovian DNA
A comparison of the high-quality genome sequence of a 50,000-year-old Neanderthal woman with those of modern humans and Denisovans reveals a long history of interbreeding among at least 4 species of early humans. The story of human evolution just got even more bizarre. The genome of an extinct hominin species, the Denisovans, contains unusual snippets of DNA that seem to have come from yet another group.

The new hominin has left its traces in the genome of a
Denisovan, an extinct hominin known to exist from a finger bone and two teeth found in a Siberian cave

Neanderthals, Denisovans,  Homo Erectus, and ?

School administrators take note.

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro, a former paratrooper, established state-run military public schools in response to school violence, drug trafficking and poor academic performance. Seven schools, 7,000 students, in high crime areas are run by military police who deal only with discipline and administrative matters.  Forty more by the end of the year. Students march to classrooms single file -- hair short for the boys, a bun for the girls. They wear uniforms,"very moderate" accessories, stand each day for the national anthem and receive civics classes. Violence is down, grades are up, students feel safer. Liberals are screaming bloody murder, but offer no solution to the nation wide school crises.

Who Knew.

When the Actor Matthew Perry died last month he was buried in a $1500 environmentally friendly edible mushroom suit invented by a California company.  The suit reduces the body's toxic pollutants, including lead and mercury, released during decomposition and cremation. Green burials are not a new concept. In Washington state human compost burials have been presented as an alternative burial option.  Human body composts as a pot of soil can be taken home and used. In the UK services provide eco-friendly funerals, including biodegradable coffins made from materials such as bamboo, willow and woven pineapple leaves.  Who knew?

Now that's a great interview.

Ackaisha Green was inside an ATM in downtown Kingston Jamaca, when she stumbled upon a stash of cash suspected to be in the millions of dollars “Mi could a take it weh, but mi never take it weh. On my way coming out with it I saw two police officers, and mi say ‘Sir, I found a bag of money and I don’t know what to do with it.’  She had noticed her 2 year old very preoccupied with a large transparent plastic with money. ‘Mi swear say a paper him a play with. When mi bend down and look is a bag of money the baby bend down a play with. You know the clear bag, like comforter spread bag, one whole heap a money wrap up together,” she said. She received a heavy tongue-lashing from her mother who described her as “the stupidest of all my children.  A mi she beg $200 this morning to give her son to go to school,” the mother complained, with a loud hiss of her teeth.

Al Bundy on Marriage

 Peg, when you married me, was it pre-meditated or a drive-by marriage?

 Peg we've been married for 17 years. Can't we just be friends?

 I deserve to be punished, I married your mother.

 Pretty good for a guy stupid enough to marry you, huh?

 Insurance is like marriage. You pay, pay, pay, and you never get anything back.

Is there no f_ _ king limit?

Save My Ink Forever, a family-run business based in Cleveland, Ohio, owned by Michael and Kyle Sherwood, works with funeral homes in the US, the UK, and Canada to preserve the tattoos of people who have died, as a memorial for their loved ones. At the request of the family, the funeral home will surgically remove the tattoo   and send it to a lab for preservation before it's mounted and framed behind UV-protective glass. The entire process takes about three months. The photo shows the preserved back and arms of a 'client.'

Construction Jobs and Career Fair

Local union apprenticeship representatives are on hand to educate students and adults about job opportunities available in the trades fields.
If you're interested in a craft, you can apply on the spot or learn more about apprenticeship programs.
According to local union reps, they're in desperate need of employees.
They're losing workers at an alarming rate because people are retiring while others are leaving the area.
"We need as many applicants as we can get, male or female, of all ages too. It doesn't matter, we'll train you. We have lots of classifications, but you'll be able to stay here. You can provide for your family, have good healthcare, good pensions, and retirement. Most importantly, when you're done with school, you'll have zero student debt," said Scott Mazzulli, business representative for Sheet Metal Workers Local 33.
All you need to be is drug-free, willing to learn, and dependable.
Jpr: this is happening all over the country!  Never seen the like in all my life!

Snakes, worship??

Every year people in Cocullo, a small medieval town in Italy's Abruzzo region, adorn a wooden statue of its patron saint with live snakes and parade it through the streets.  The "serpari" festival, on 1 May, honours San Domenico di Sora for miraculously removing snakes from farmers' fields in the 11th Century. The festival originated from the ancient worship rites of Angitia, a Roman goddess of snakes worshipped by people in central Italy.
