Snow Rollers

A snow roller is a rare meteorological phenomenon in which large snowballs are formed naturally as chunks of snow are blown along the ground by wind, picking up material along the way, in much the same way that the large snowballs used in snowmen are made.
Unlike snowballs made by people, snow rollers are typically cylindrical in shape, and are often hollow since the inner layers, which are the first layers to form, are weak and thin compared to the outer layers and can easily be blown away. Snow rollers can grow as large as a foot in diameter

  1. I'm not sure that my memory is accurate but it seems that I've seen some snow rollers that were a bit larger than a foot in diameter, maybe even two feet. It was some time ago and I can't remember where but I remember it was a very cold winter with some snow but not a great amount.

  2. I suppose that from a purely physical standpoint one foot might be the practical limit on these rollers, because of either inability to continue rolling or inability to support additional growth. I ain't no physics or engineering dude so tell me. I do think it somehow has caught my interest in a Zen Koan kind of way.
