Nighthawks is a 1942 painting by American artist Edward Hopper. Frequently found in various representations of American culture, it has a mystery about it. Hopper posed for the men at the counter and his wife for the woman. Hopper's biographer believes the work was inspired by Van Gogh's 'Night Cafe', and/or by a scene from Hemmingway's short story 'the killers.'
