Many chicks and soccer moms and starlets clamor for the rights of Muslim women (truthiness - most men don't care), citing the fact that there are restrictions on their lives (burka is one example plus many proscriptions on behavior - e.g. cannot go out alone, cannot be seen in the company of a man who is not a close relative; frequently can't vote; have little legal support, etc.). We may be correct in drawing attention to repressive inequalities between men's rights and women's rights in these societies. We are probably not correct or should I say not honest when we ignore or even admire similar rules and restrictions in various US sub-cultures.
Examples: If a woman is of the faith that is represented by the church of God, thy must not cut their hair or wear other than long skirts after reaching womanhood; or Amish women who wear the drabbest getup you can find, go without electricity, running water, or Toyota Prisuses; the lack of genuine freedom for women to wear ugly clothing, too modest clothing, or cheap clothing, or to wear (god forbid) men's clothing. I cited Amish and Church of God. I can name many others if you wish. So here's my point - something, something about the mote in your neighbor's eye, and something, something about the damn beam in your own eye.
Oh yeah by the way, unchecked Capitalism sux.
