Psychiatry's Bible, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual V5 for Normal, Nutty, Nuttier, and Pay for my Boat Nutty

For someone struggling to manage their life and/or various problems, Psychiatry can be a God Send.  I've known a few such Docs and come to admire and respect the ones who are proficient at matching up the right Rx with the individual's symptoms.  This involves some "talking" in order to diagnose but "talk therapy" is seldom used by most Psychiatrists anymore.  They prescribe and monitor.

For billing and diagnosing, the DSMV-5 is the Manual.  Some version has been used for years.  You may be interested to know that the  hundreds of Psychiatric Illnesses identified is the result of a large Committee of Psychiatrists meeting every once in awhile at an international Convention and suggesting new diagnoses to include and some to exclude (e.g. homosexuality).  The meetings are mostly chaotic and involve professional politics, schmoozing, etc.    No research is presented for the new diagnoses.   The Doctors ultimately vote on which maladies  to be included.  The first DSMV  included about 150 disorders.    The recent DSMV5  has grown to nearly a thousand disorders that are billable.  Get it, they have improved their odds of you coming into their office and being able to bill you and a third party for something diagnosable.   We've all got one or more diagnoses, they count on it.

The Science of Psychiatry related to this all-important source of diagnosis, treatment, prescriptions, and billing, is absent.  Scientific methods to provide evidence of the validity and reliability of Psychiatric Conditions - absolutely NONE!.  It's all done by AGREEMENT.  Holy Kerfluffel Batman!!   The Manual used to Diagnose can provide no scientific reference to use to distinguish an illness from normal, say distinguish normal Paraphilias (persons interested in atypical sexual practices) from Paraphilic Disorders (persons whose atypical sexual practices constitute a treatable illness).  The text of the manual offers a distinction and clinical criteria that appears very precise but there is no science behind it, no research, no charts, no null hypotheses, no way to test for or measure precisely what the differences are.

The current version of the Manual  includes a disorder related to the eating of one's own boogers;  a mathematics disorder; Jet Lag disorder, and numerous other silly disorders.   New diagnoses will likely spawn new pharmaceuticals to treat them.  What a scam!

  1. Two of my diagnoses include "matrimonia dyslexia" and "bitchum delerium", related to the inability to select an appropriate mate and the self-dumbassism needed to go ahead and pair-bond anyway. I am also a certified nomosexual, which is not billable.
