red hair and black leather, my favorite color scheme

Contrary to what many people assume, redheads did not originate in Scandinavia,Scotland or Ireland, but in central Asia. Their coloring is due to a mutation in the MC1R gene that fails to produce sun-protective, skin-darkening eumelanin and instead causes pale skin, freckles and red hair.

Neanderthals had a mutation in this receptor gene which changed an amino acid, making the resulting protein less efficient and likely creating a phenotype of red hair and pale skin. ... Modern humans display similar mutations of MCR1, and people who have two copies of this mutation have red hair and pale skin.

this will freak you:

  1. Everybody knows freckles are made by eating corn flakes

  2. thank you for weighing in for science.

  3. there are groups in Melanisia where 25% of the populace have dark skin and blonde hair. Note the shade of blonde is invariable in the folks. One shade for the blondes.
