The practice may date back to the 1700's when in Scotland ill people stuck coins into trees in hopes of taking away their sickness. A similar practice in the US puts a different spin on it - people who are looking for a cure for their chronic penury and discontentment put coins into mechanical traps in and around Las Vegas.
