Recent US Navy incidents are a fluke that requires investigation. The sophistication of the Electronics involved and the high level of training and diligence of multiple sailors tell me that something is awry. Every sailor I've ever known, even the slovenly and decrepit, is aware of the great responsibility of staying alert to protect the lives of their shipmates. Yes there might be an a-hole who ignores this but its never left to a single sailor. There are redundancies plus redundancies. Throw in some state of the art electronics and you have a nearly fail-safe system. The Captain could be drugged up on Oxycontin or Bourban or Mushrooms and the "Watch" will still function as normal. Letting another vehicle run into your ship is unheard of, unthinkable. And its happened again and again.
This isn't a question of someone asleep at the wheel. It's a question of who's mucking with the gear!!!
