Can the Irish hold a grudge or what?

In 2005 an 18' statue of Francis Drake was erected in Cork, Ireland. It was immediately vandalized for the sailor's participation in the 1575 massacre of 600 Irish and Scot men, women and children on Rathlin Island off the Irish coast.
