Dr. Eleanor Sauers, who teaches religious studies at Fairfield University, takes over in January as the head of St. Anthony of Padua parish in upscale Fairfield Ct. She has been given full decision-making authority at the parish, where a team of priests will assist her by celebrating mass and carrying out clerical duties. The pastor died suddenly in September. WIth the growing shortage of priests the number of women heading parishes while small, is growing.
